Design, engineering key to casino success
If the planners of the proposed casino at Hardeeville apply some of Disney's "imagineering" properly, Gov. Nikki Haley might be sure of her decision to approve an outstanding project with far-reaching benefits for all South Carolinians.
The devil is in the details, and so is the secret for success.
The insightful story in the Feb. 9 paper omitted a few facts that the planners might well consider, namely that designers have a tendency to rely on unrealistic budgets and omit critical elements in design, such as landscaping features, which not only buffer the parking, but also enhance the project with a careful balance between nature and asphalt.
Realistic planning for "intermodal transfer" between buses, pedestrians, trucks and vehicles arriving and leaving also are often omitted by engineers and architects.
The project might look good as a model for presentation, but unless each of the elements is considered with rigorous discipline, just one error in planning or engineering can result in a failed or economically unsustainable project. Problems in retention basins at the referenced Lake Las Vegas resulted in failure to hold water, causing millions in emergency repairs and entire phases to be redesigned and delayed.
Disney was meticulous with its planning at Orlando, and the results speak for themselves. Hardeeville can achieve the same with good planning and proper engineering.
